I wrote The South Gut after a short holiday to Devon, one of the only times I had ever feared for my life. There isn’t any fiction here, this is purely anecdotal (though the names have been changed), and two-thirds of the characters are still in my life. In fact I even gave a speech at “Joe’s” wedding recently, and so did “Alex”.
Real life versions of Alex, Bambi and Joe respectively
There was even a moment where we nearly ended up on the 15 Selfies Taken Moments Before Death list, right before a big wave drenched the camera.
The ending was once described as chilling, but it’s not a horror story by any stretch, more of a cautionary tale.
